Did Earth's Twin Cores Spark Plate Tectonics?

Jan. 6, 2009 -- It's a classic image from every youngster's science textbook: a cutaway image of Earth's interior. The brown crust is paper-thin; the warm mantle orange, the seething liquid of the outer core yellow, and at the center the core, a ball of solid, red-hot iron.

Now a new theory aims to rewrite it all by proposing the seemingly impossible: Earth has not one but two inner cores.

The idea stems from an ancient, cataclysmic collision that scientists believe occurred when a Mars-sized object hit Earth about 4.45 billion years ago. The young Earth was still so hot that it was mostly molten, and debris flung from the impact is thought to have formed the moon.

Haluk Cetin and Fugen Ozkirim of Murray State University think the core of the Mars-sized object may have been left behind inside Earth, and that it sank down near the original inner core. There the two may still remain, either separate or as conjoined twins, locked in a tight orbit.

Their case is largely circumstantial and speculative, Cetin admitted.

"We have no solid evidence yet, and we're not saying 100 percent that it still exists," he said. "The interior of Earth is a very hard place to study."

The ancient collision is a widely accepted phenomenon. But most scientists believe the incredible pressure at the center of the planet would've long since pushed the two cores into each other.

Still, the inner core is a mysterious place. Recently, scientists discovered that it rotates faster than the rest of the planet. And a study last year of how seismic waves propagate through the iron showed that the core is split into two distinct regions.

Beyond that, little is known. But Cetin and Ozkirim think a dual inner core can explain the rise of plate tectonics, and help explain why the planet remains hotter today than it should be, given its size.

"If this is true, it would change all Earth models as we know them," Cetin said. "If not, and these two cores coalesced early on, we would have less to say, but it could still be how plate tectonics got started."

Based on models of Earth's interior, Cetin thinks the two cores rotate in opposite directions, like the wheels of a pasta maker. Their motion would suck in magma from behind and spit it out in front. If this motion persisted for long enough, it could set up a giant current of circulation that would push plates of crust apart in front, and suck them down into the mantle in back.

Friction generated by the motion would keep the planet hot.

Scientists asked to comment on this hypothesis were extremely skeptical. Some asked not to be quoted, citing insufficient evidence to make a well-reasoned critique of the study, which the authors presented last month at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco.

"In terms of its volume, and even its mass, the Earth's inner core is quite small relative to the whole planet, about 1 percent," Paul Richards of Columbia University said. "I seriously doubt that inner core dynamics could play a significant role in moving the tectonic plates."

Did Magnetic Blip Trigger Mass Extinction?

Dec. 12, 2008 -- It was a dying on a scale never seen before or since on Earth. The slaughter was everywhere; the fertile ocean and balmy supercontinent Pangea were transformed into killing fields, littered with the bodies of ancient animals. By the time the dust had settled on the Permian-Triassic mass extinction 250 million years ago, 90 percent of life on the planet had been snuffed out.

Now a new theory suggests the catastrophe was set in motion 15 million years earlier, deep in the Earth. On the edge of the molten outer core, a plume of super-hot material began rising through the mantle, upsetting convection in the core and throwing the planet's magnetic field into disarray.

The weakening of Earth's magnetic field exposed the surface to a shower of cosmic radiation, says Yukio Isozaki of the University of Tokyo. He believes the radiation broke nitrogen in the atmosphere into ions that acted as seeds for clouds enshrouding the planet.

"This would've caused severe cooling and a drop in sea level" as the cool temperatures allowed massive ice sheets to accumulate on the continents, Isozaki said. "If you check the rock record at that time, tropical coral reefs die first. Then you start to see fauna from mid latitudes move into the tropics. It all points to cooling."

The superplume disrupted the magnetic field and put a strain on creatures living on the surface, but it was only the beginning. Five million years later it reached the surface, Isozaki said, and the hot material punched through the crust, erupting as three successive supervolcanoes.

Today the remnants of those volcanoes are scattered through India, China and Norway. On their own they were too small to do much harm, but together Isozaki thinks they cooled the climate even further, launching an extinction as bad as the one that would kill the dinosaurs 185 million years later.

Then, 10 million years later, the Permian-Triassic extinction struck.

"The effects of the superplume were just the first punch of extinction," Isozaki said. "Then came the knockout punch, the Permian-Triassic extinction."

Isozaki thinks both "punches" were caused by the same superplume. Ten million years after the smaller volcanoes blew their tops, a much larger volcano, the Siberian Traps, erupted, launching the worst killing in the planet's history.

Gregory Retallack of the University of Oregon agrees that the late Permian round of extinction was bad -- as much as 67 percent of species were eradicated. But he doesn't think the two events are related. In the 10 million years after the first punch in the late Permian, he said, life recovered.

"The late Permian looks good all over the world," Retallack said. "You've got corals, healthy marine communities, and lots of fossil flora on land."

There's no questioning the severity of the Permian-Triassic crisis -- "We almost lost it there," Retallack said -- but whether the two can be traced a single mantle superplume, or they were unrelated, remains a mystery for now.

As students (gahut students, for that matter), we usually study or cram until the wee hours in the morning. Then we end up sleeping for...three or four hours max?! Well, how's that for "sleep"? So when we wake up we feel dissatisfied, empty, even unhappy sometimes. We also tend to doze off during classes when we are at school. So, here's the deal:

Did you know that lack of sleep damages your liver?

A good rest from those backbreaking activities and a sound sleep are very important factors for wellness. If you don't sleep well, the toxins in your body might accumulate, affecting your health and your mood.

The main causes of liver damage are:

1. Sleeping too late and waking up too late.

2. Not urinating in the morning.

3. Too much eating.

4. Skipping breakfast.

5. Consuming too much medication.

6. Consuming too much preservatives, additives, food coloring and artificial sweeteners.

7. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil. As much as possible reduce cooking oil use when frying, which includes even the best cooking oils like olive oil. Do not consume fried foods when you are tired, except if the body is very fit.

8. Consuming overly done foods also add to the burden of liver. Veggies should be eaten raw or cooked 3-5 parts. Fried veggies should be finished in one sitting, do not store.
(and I wonder why alcohol isn't included. Hmmm...)

We just have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits. Maintaining good eating habits and time condition are very important for our body to absorb and get rid of unnecessary chemicals according to "schedule". Because...

Evening at 9 - 11pm : is the time for eliminating unnecessary/ toxic chemicals (detoxification) from the antibody system (lymph nodes). This time duration should be spent by relaxing or listening to music. If during this time a person is still in an unrelaxed state such as washing the dishes or doing homework, this will have a negative impact on his/her health.

Evening at 11pm - 1am : is the detoxification process in the liver, and ideally should be done in a deep sleep state.

Early morning 1 - 3am : is the detoxification process in the gall, also ideally done in a deep sleep state.

Early morning 3 - 5am : is the detoxification in the lungs. Therefore there will sometimes be a severe cough for cough sufferers during this time. Since the detoxification process had reached the respiratory tract, there is no need to take cough medicine so as not to interfere with toxin removal process.

Morning 5 - 7am : detoxification in the colon. you should empty your bowel.

Morning 7 - 9am : Absorption of nutrients in the small intestine. You should be having breakfast at this time. Breakfast should be earlier, before 6:30am, for those who are sick. Breakfast before 7:30am is very beneficial to those wanting to stay fit. Those who always skip breakfast should change their habits. It is still better to eat breakfast late until 9 -10am rather than no meal at all. Sleeping so late and waking up too late will disrupt the process of removing unnecessary chemicals. Aside from that, midnight to 4am is the time when the bone marrow produces blood.

Therefore, have a good sleep and don't sleep late!

WRITING A BOTANY FIELD TRIP REPORT

1. CONCISE: For day trips, reports should be between 2-4 pages to allow for drawings and/or graphics. For longer trips, more than 6-10 pages to include a more detailed discussion.

2. DRAWINGS AND PHOTOGRAPHS are encouraged. Drawings should be black ink or dark pencil on white paper. Photographs should be simple in composition and with lots of contrast (tonal range from very dark to very light).

3. COMMON NAMES are variable and will depend on the dialect used in the plant’s location. Common names go first, with scientific names following in parentheses: Basilan apitong (Dipterocarpus eurynchus ).

4. SCIENTIFIC NAMES can be provided later if you are unsure as long as it is clear which plant is being discussed. For unsure species, use Genus sp., for example, Musa sp. for an unknown species of a membe rof the banana family. The genus should be capitalized, the species is all lower case: Musa sapientum. Both should be italicized or underlined.

5. GROUPS OF SPECIES. For a number of species within a group, name the group at the beginning, then only the individual name afterwards. In a single paragraph, the second citation of a genus name should be abbreviated to its first letter followed by a period. Ex. Dipterocarpus eurynchus, D. grandiflorus and D. hasseltii.

6. GENERAL TIPS:

In addition to specific questions and directions provided by your instructor, reports should include the location, date, and the reporter’s name, address and telephone and/or email address. You might also include weather, number of people present and names. Record the name of your trip leader and classmates joining the trip. Include an interesting story, observation, or interesting fact. We DON'T want a list of plants you saw! Write about what you liked. Write about what other people did. Write about relationships: between the plants, between plants and their habitat, between plants and people. Make your personal observations in a quiet place. Observe while sitting, standing and lying down. You’ll be amazed how different your perspectives from these positions will be! (EMMMOO)

Note: During the trip, write notes and observations in your field notebook. Your instructor will sign her initials in your field notebook. Reports will be collected on the first class meeting following the field trip.

Exercise 2. Isolation of Microorganism into Pure Culture

1. Explain the principle behind isolation by streak plating.

Purpose: To obtain isolated colonies of a pure or mixed culture.

Principle: By spreading a large amount of bacteria over the large surface area of a plate, the amount of bacteria is diluted until individual cells are spread on the surface of the plate. From these individual cells a single colony arises. All of the cells in this colony are genetically identical.

3. Why should the media be cooled to around 45 degree Celsius before pouring in spread plating?in pour plating?

Media should be cooled to around 45 degree Celsius because at this temperature the media is still liquid; hence, it can be poured in spread and pour plating. Furthermore, the media above 45 degree Celsius is still hot and might not kill the microorganisms in the inoculum which will be placed on the plates. Also, the media below the said temperature is solid; hence, it cannot be poured in any of the plating techniques.

4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of spread and pour plating? Can you consider them as reliable methods of determining cell concentration?

Spread Plating:

advantages:

With spread plating you get more individual, isolated colonies, making it much easier to count.
spread plate is generally used when calculating CFUs/ml
with spread plates, you can pour your media in advance and then test several dilutions

disadvantages: _____________. (pakisupply nalang).
Pour Plating:

advantages:

you can see if your bacteria is an anaerobe, aerobe or a facultative aerobe
pour plate can be used as an alternative

disadvantages:

One of the disadvantage of the pour plate is that there might be difficulty when colonies are required to be picked for further screening and analyses.
One potential problem when doing a pour plate is that you can add your bacteria to the media before it has cooled sufficiently, therefore killing some of the bacteria and affecting your CFUs/ml
if you don't swirl the media enough after you add the dilution of bacteria, you won't get even distribution of colonies on a plate, making it pretty hard to count accurate CFUs

Slime molds are composed of an acellular mass of naked protoplasm with no cell walls in its vegetative state. They are typically found in damp, shady areas with abundant organic matter, although they may move to bright areas to "fruit."

The myxomycetes (plasmodial slime molds) are a group of fungus-like organisms usually present and sometimes abundant in terrestrial ecosystems. The myxomycete life cycle involves two very different trophic (feeding) stages, one consisting of uninucleate amoebae, with or without flagella, and the other consisting of a distinctive multinucleate structure, the plasmodium. Myxomycete plasmodia typically occur in cool, moist, shady places such as within crevices of decaying wood, beneath the partially decayed bark of logs and stumps, and in leaf litter on the forest floor. Under favorable conditions, the plasmodium gives rise to one or more fruiting bodies containing spores. The spores of myxomycetes are for most species apparently wind-dispersed and complete the life cycle by germinating to produce the uninucleate amoeboflagellate cells.

The fruiting bodies produced by myxomycetes are somewhat suggestive of those produced by higher fungi, although they are considerably smaller (usually no more than 1-2 mm tall). Although large enough to be seen with the naked eye, they are best observed with a hand lens or under a stereomicroscope. Only then can their intricate nature be fully appreciated. Fruiting bodies may take the shape of tiny goblets, globes, plumes, or other shapes more difficult to describe. Some occur in tightly packed clusters, while others are scattered or even solitary. Many of the more intricate forms have a spore case held aloft on a delicate stalk, but others are attached directly to the substrate by their bases.

Di ko alam kung anong napasok sa isip ko pero i feel like describing people talaga. Pero bago yan, maggawa daw ako ng generalization about each block ng batch natin sa bio. Char! Galing lang ito sa mga sinabi natin nung Isla Reta thingy.

Berguila - minsan over sa pagka masayahing bata. and ALMOST ALWAYS emo na bata. grabe. Pwede nya na sigurong angkinin ang title na "Emo Princess". Feeling ko kasi nasa daily routine nya na ang pag emo2x. hehe *peace PRENCESS!*

Bulseco - isa lang jud ang akong maingon. Jamaluddin - adik sa Maroon 5, sya mismo nagsabi, corny daw jokes nya. Maaasahang bata. As in! Ready gud lagi ang mga froggy namin sa Bio lab! Salamat kay Sheara! hehe Di ko rin makalimutan yung 'spaghetti moment' nating tatlo nila Cha. hahaha Wala lang. Nakatawa ako dun sa ginawa natin. hahaha

Lacap - may bayla material according to Yuri! hahaha And bago lang na-discover, isa pala syang tiga dagat. Sya daw si Marina. Asa ka ana?! Naligo lang sya sa dagat, nahimo na sya ug Marina. hehe Ambot lang ha, feeling nako, hilom-hilom lang usahay si Anj pero once mag burst ang iyang emotions, ma-shock na lang ka kay murag bata pud diay sya. haha lingaw!

Lacsamana - partners talaga to silang dalawa ni Princess. hehe sa mga weird moments nila. *wala kasi akong ibang maisip na term* Gusto ko rin talaga the way magsalita si Mikko in english. lingaw sya pakinggan! hahaha Gaya nung last time sabi nya "I want more! I know you can do better than that!" with all the feelings jud sya. hahaha

Lagmay - si bracket A na di daw bracket A. Emotera lagi daw sya kahit hindi obvious. Tas dati, (though minsan na lang ngayon) feeling ko, pag may makita akong pink stuff si Ai2x na ang owner. Marami kasi syang pink colored na gamit. hehehe

Mabras - though dili klaro sa itsura, pero maka-shock ang kalalom sa iyang bisaya. hehe ug char pud diay ang iyang talent! hidden talent ni Brigida ang magsayaw. Lumabas ang tunay na kakayahan nung Kasadya. Feeling ko di lang ako ang na-shock. Halos lahat ata ng tao? Di mo aakalaing magaling din pala syang sumayaw and brainy high pa jud! AMAYZING! hehe

Mahomoc - kung si Jansel imong kauban, ambot lang pero feeling nako kay murag weird ang tagalog words kay makabisaya jud ka kung sya imong kastorya. diba Jansel? Ang iyang famous words na 'kay' pati 'rakan' at marami pang iba jud ang isa sa akong maremember sa iya. hehe

Malabanan - isa sa mga puzzle sakin til now. bakit naging 'tibo' si Cha? Pano nangyari yun? hahaha anyway, ewan ko lang kung napansin nya pero feeling ko bading sya magsalita. *slight* hehe isa sa maremember ko dati, nung 1st sem, parang issue masyado sa kanila ang baboy thingy ba. Pero ngayon, parang wala na lang! hehe

Malubay - ehem! bakit yun talaga ang naiisip ko? haha (sana may kapareho ako ng iniisip). Isa siguro sa na-amaze ko na ginawa ni Lyle, nag disect silang dalawa ni Kyle ng frog, bare-hand. Dili uso ang gloves sa ilang world. haha And ma-nosebleed pud ko sa iyang english. hehehe

Mitra - super bihira ko lang talaga makita si James. Sa klase ko lang ata sya nakikita or minsan pag dumadaan ako ng dorm. Yun lang! I am aware na may mga taong di talaga makalapit sa kanya sa di malamang kadahilanan. hehe bongga baya yun sya. hehe

Ramos - kung si Inna ang ina ng bio, si Neil na siguro ang tatay ng bio. hehe si Neil kasi ang laging in charge of everything basta kasali ang buong bio (at least sa batch natin). hehe idol ko rin si Neil dun sa fire poi thingy! as in! kagaling mo talaga! AMAYZING jud sya! hehe and yah, suki masyado eto silang dalawa nila Mon sa multiply para mag-away. hehe

Secretaria - si Pastora according to Ai2x. Bitaw. Feeling ko si Leizel na talaga ang panalo sa mga stuff na related sa relihiyon. hehe Pasimple lang din si Leizel pero kuyaw talaga ang level ng kanyang mga words of wisdom. ang fave ko is yung 'ayaw mo sige ug picture ba! wala na koy privacy! ang akong dignidad' hahaha lingaw noh? sikat din yan sya coz of her 'bedroom voice' hehe

Last February 16, we had our field trip in Maragusan, ComVal Province. It's a grueling four hour ride from the city proper. We conducted terrestrial and aquatic transects out there and we had fun in our field trip. :)

It's quite unusual to have only one to two classes in one day. Well that happened on our first day of classes last Thursday, January 3, 2008. We don't have Math 14, Bio 3 Lab and Lec and etc. Also, we didn't have a class on our chem 17, meaning, we didn't have a LONG quiz last Friday. Oh yeah.

For those who believed that we (ralph, renz, mark, ai-ai, angelyn, leizel and lyle) watched katas ng saudi and anak ng kumander, ate at nccc mall, ate at McDo MTS and those nonsense stories created by us, WELL THAT'S TOTALLY RIDICULOUS! HAHAHAHA Lol.

Oh yeah. Sabing's going to be evicted by the Administration of UP. NO MORE SABING, NO MORE CHEAP AND YUMMY FOOD, LESS MONEY TO SAVE. Ugggh. Sayonara Ate Sabing, we'll surely miss your delicious delicacies. *Sniff-sniff.

Oh yeah, guys is it true that we will have our field trip in SAMAL ISLAND SOON? WOW. I hope Ma'am Ates and Ma'am Nemenzo would collaborate on this fun-filled exposure trip. [ getting more EXCITED and IMPATIENT]

Flamin' Freshmeats

With some of the upclass people!

Alright, BIO-Week is a week (obviously??) dedicated for the BIO students of UP-Mindanao. Likewise, this week has a lot of unprecedent and unpredicted trends and stuffs not only for BIO students but also for the whole students of UP-Mindanao.

Nevertheless, we had a some-sort-of-a-COSTUME party for a week (can you suggest a good 'ol term perhaps??)

On Tuesday, we were asked to wear our old OLD HIGHSCHOOL UNIFORM!

Awww .. reminsicing those old moments, reliving those past connundrums during our highshchool days. Awwww.

That was the most RELAXING Tuesday that I've experienced. No Philo, and No Chem. We just ate durian (until Ina got drunk.. ehehe) and a whole lot more of fruits. LOTS and LOTS of FRUITS.

On Wednesday, we just wore a black shirt and it's kinda boring and hot, actually.

That Wednesday night, Ate Niña, Ate Yora and Kuya Xtian invited us, (Ai-ai and yours truly, (Renz)) to join the TALISIKAY '07. Well, obviously we didn't won though the good thing was, we were not the lowest in that certain quiz bee. We almost made it to the final round though (or not..)

Anyways, on Thursday, we wore a formal dress with a TWEST (twist ..) and we just enjoyed our costumes and everything.

AND on FRIDAY, we wore our own RED SHIRTS - FLAMIN' HOT RED shirt. Also, we attended the BIO-BINGO. It was frustrating yet a funny experience. Despite the heavy downpour last night, our spirits were not drenched by our cheerful jeers and laughters that we have made. Haaay. Good thing, Lian won the BINGO! Yahoo!

We DANCED, yet we remained HUMBLE

We danced. We practiced for a long period of time. We crammed our bones. We tried and NEVER FAILED. We sacrificed a LOT of time (even our studies were affected). We dedicated our lives for it. We NEVER complained in a rascal manner - not at all! We danced 'til we bathed ourselves with our own sweat. We rode habal-habal at 10 in the evening and sometimes we're caught by the rain. We got home, SOAKED and DRENCHED with rain water. We all got tired but never gave up. We gave our best. We didn't expect to win or not.

And guess what? All those fulfilling memories are meant to be cherished. Indeed, it was ALL WORTH IT!

Congratulations to all of us, Bio dancers!

And also to our Isko and Iska- Neil Ramos and Ina Abian! Job well done guys!
